PLEASE NOTE: There are a number of different tele-underwriting methods in the market. We are using ‘small t’ underwriting, which is different from ‘big t’ underwriting used by some other providers. ‘Small t’ underwriting means that the Society still requires the health section (section D) of the application form to be completed, and we use a tele-interview to follow up medical questions in the application form. This therefore reduces the need for us to request medical questionnaires/statements from your clients and GP reports from doctors.

‘Small t’ is different from ‘big t’ underwriting in that ‘big t’ doesn’t require the applicant to complete any health information on the application form at all. Because we still ask applicants to complete the health section of the application form (section D), our ‘small t’ tele-interviews are generally shorter in duration as they are only used to follow up answers rather than complete a whole medical review over the phone.

We appreciate that not every applicant wants to be interviewed over the telephone. If your client would prefer not to have a telephone interview then they can choose the traditional paper based route. Please state when submitting an application if you would like your client to go through the traditional paper based underwriting process. Please be aware that the traditional paper based underwriting route could be a longer process for your clients. If you do not specify, the application will be progressed with the use of a small ‘t’ tele-interview should further information be required.

Once our ‘small t’ tele-interview is complete, this should, in most cases, negate the need for us to request further medical information.

For more information on the ‘small t’ process please refer to the documents above.
