Cirencester Friendly celebrates achieving its carbon footprint offset

We’ve been protecting and supporting our Members for over 130 years, so it’s only natural that we’re keen to protect and support the environment they – and we – live in, too. That’s why we’re delighted to tell you that we’ve achieved a neutral carbon footprint through offsetting. Not that we’re stopping there. Our aim is to keep improving and become carbon positive.

Achieving net zero carbon emissions

As a socially responsible business, we’ve always taken an active interest in the wider community. But, over the years, we’ve become increasingly concerned about the environment and are keen help to combat climate change.

So we looked closely at how we use our resources to make sure we’re being considerate to the planet. This involved examining the amount of greenhouse gases we produce, both through our buildings but also the travel of our staff, and challenging ourselves to improve. For example, by converting to renewable energy, reducing waste, increasing recycling, striving to distribute only environmentally friendly merchandise and developing our plan to support local environmental initiatives.

Having calculated our carbon footprint, we found we were still a little short so we then bought enough trees to offset emissions we couldn’t avoid or reduce.

Contributing to a brighter future

Our tree grove, carefully planted in a protected site in the Scottish Highlands through the Trees for Life initiative, will create homes for wildlife and forests for the future.

Among other benefits, trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, and provide habitat to over 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity. Contributing to a brighter future for everyone.

Investing in our Members’ futures

Director of Finance and Risk Andy Morris said: “We’re delighted to have achieved net zero carbon emissions at Cirencester Friendly. But while carbon neutrality is a great milestone for us, it’s certainly not the end of our journey. As a mutual, we put our Members at the heart of everything we do, and helping to look after the world they live in is vitally important to the Society. That’s why we pledge to invest further in our efforts to help protect the environment. Our climate change working group is constantly challenging the way we do things and looking for better, more environmentally friendly ways to do business and, in consequence, help protect our Members’ futures.”
